A shooting at Old Dominion University in Virginia resulted in the death of one person and injuries to two others. The gunman, Mohamed Baylor Jarrow, a former Army National Guard soldier, had been serving time for attempting to support the Islamic State. He opened fire in a classroom while shouting “Allah Akbar,” but was overpowered and killed by Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) students within 10 minutes of the attack.

The FBI is investigating the incident as terrorism. Jarrow had previously pleaded guilty to supporting ISIS and was on supervised release when the shooting occurred. It remains unclear why his release came early. The deceased victim was identified as Lt. Col. Brandon Shah, who had returned to ODU to lead the ROTC program.

Jarrow’s background includes a troubled history involving extremist ideology and previous attempts to commit acts of violence. His sister and attorney expressed surprise and sorrow over the attack, emphasizing that such acts contradict Islamic teachings. Following the shooting, classes were canceled, and the university extended a period of mourning for the victims.
