Rivian’s R2 electric SUV, announced in 2024, generated excitement with its $45,000 starting price, appealing to buyers seeking affordability in EVs. This price, however, is primarily for the base model and is considered aspirational, with expectations that most buyers will pay more. The initial dual-motor Performance trim is priced at $59,485, boasting features like 656 horsepower, a 0-60 mph time of 3.6 seconds, and a 330-mile range. Various drive modes and high-end audio options are included, alongside unique features like rear drop glass.
The R2 lineup includes a Premium trim for $55,485 and a Standard (Long Range) version launching in early 2027 at $49,985, which offers different specifications and features. The true base model, expected at the end of 2027, won’t include the destination fee, raising the actual price to $46,495.
Rivian aims to deliver 20,000 to 25,000 units by the end of 2026, despite challenges in meeting the affordability promise. Notably, the R2 is designed to compete effectively in the midsize SUV market, with comparisons drawn to the Tesla Model Y.
