In an ongoing conflict between Iran and Israel, it has been reported that nearly half of the approximately 300 ballistic missiles fired by Iran at Israel were equipped with cluster bomb warheads. This information was released by the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) after a missile attack in central Israel resulted in two fatalities and serious injuries. While most missiles were intercepted, one struck a vacant lot in Beit Shemesh, causing no additional injuries.
Cluster bombs disperse multiple explosive munitions over a wide area and are banned under the 2008 Convention on Cluster Munitions, a treaty not signed by Israel, Iran, or the U.S. Amnesty International noted that similar munitions were used by Iran during a previous conflict.
The current war started on February 28, with the U.S. and Israel conducting bombardments against Iran. In response, Iran launched numerous missiles and drones at Israel, with attacks targeting civilian areas and military sites. The IDF has reported targeting Iranian missile launchers, claiming to have neutralized about 60% of Iran’s missile stockpile.
Recent missile attacks from Iran have subsided in frequency, with fewer missiles launched daily. The IDF continues to assess Iran’s capability to conduct sustained strikes against Israel amid ongoing military operations.
