A recent study of Norway’s Jostedal glacier reveals alarming predictions concerning its future due to rising carbon dioxide emissions. Researchers, using simulations, forecast that if current emissions continue, glaciers could shrink to one-third their size by 2100 and vanish entirely by 2300. Even with modest emissions reductions, half of the glacier area would still be lost by 2100, with little chance of regrowth.
The shrinking glaciers exacerbate unpredictable and dangerous weather patterns globally, as they are crucial for regulating climate. Smaller glaciers have already begun to disappear, mirroring trends seen in Arctic sea ice and Antarctic glaciers.
