Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the head of Uganda’s defense forces and a senior adviser to President Yoweri Museveni, recently retracted his accusations against the U.S. regarding the disappearance of opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu (Bobi Wine). Initially, Kainerugaba announced a suspension of military cooperation with the U.S., claiming that the U.S. embassy was colluding with opposition leaders to orchestrate Kyagulanyi’s disappearance. He criticized the embassy for undermining security relations, which he believed had worsened since 2015.
However, the following day, Kainerugaba deleted his earlier statements and apologized, stating he had been misinformed. He confirmed that military cooperation would continue as usual. This rapid reversal eased immediate tensions but raised concerns about his social media approach, which often blurs personal opinion and official policy.
Additionally, Kainerugaba had directed that Kyagulanyi be barred from participating in Uganda’s electoral process citing national security and warned that anyone aligning with him would face consequences. Bobi Wine has accused Kainerugaba and the military of escalating political violence, claiming over 100 of his supporters have been killed recently.
