A bus trip from New York City to Washington, D.C., took an alarming turn when the driver abandoned the intended route and opted for an unknown destination. According to a viral thread by user Musicology Duck on Bluesky, after a driver change at a rest stop, the new driver ignored passengers’ pleas to proceed to Union Station, instead speeding down the freeway. Despite attempts from passengers and company staff to communicate with the driver, he refused to cooperate, citing inadequate pay as his reason for not stopping in D.C.
Passengers debated contacting the police, which they eventually did due to concerns about aggressive driving. By 10 p.m., the driver dropped everyone off at the Vienna Metro Station, dismissively chasing away those retrieving their luggage. The Fairfax County Police were called, but by the time they arrived, the bus had left the area.
In response to the incident, BestBus issued full refunds and travel vouchers to affected passengers and launched an internal investigation, assuring that such behavior does not reflect their service standards. They promised to review driver actions and operational procedures to prevent future incidents. BestBus operates routes between New York City, Washington, D.C., and other locations, with Vienna Metro Station being a regular stop.
