Prince Harry appeared in London’s High Court against Associated Newspapers Limited (ANL), the publisher of the Daily Mail, over allegations of phone hacking and illegal information-gathering practices dating back to the 1990s. He, along with six other celebrities including Elton John and Elizabeth Hurley, initiated the lawsuit in October 2022, and the trial has finally commenced.
The plaintiffs allege ANL used tactics like hiring private investigators for illegal surveillance and accessing confidential information. ANL denies all accusations, labeling them as unfounded and calling the claims “ridiculous.” The stakes are high, with legal costs estimated at £40 million ($53.5 million).
Harry is expected to testify, having previously faced legal battles with other tabloids. His allegations are founded on 14 articles that he claims caused significant distress to him and his family. He criticized the invasion of privacy, describing it as frightening and damaging to his personal relationships.
Experts speculate that Harry’s actions may be motivated by a desire to change media practices, inspired by the treatment of his mother, Princess Diana, by the press. Previous legal challenges have seen him win cases against other tabloids, indicating his persistent efforts to hold the media accountable.
