Xcel Energy has initiated a precautionary power outage for approximately 50,000 customers in Boulder, Clear Creek, Jefferson, Larimer, and Weld counties starting at 10 a.m. Wednesday due to high winds, dry conditions, and significant fire danger. Winds are expected to reach up to 135 mph, prompting the outages to prevent fire risks from downed power lines. The situation is exacerbated by drought conditions and unseasonably warm temperatures.
In preparation, schools in the region have made adjustments, with Weld County School District canceling classes for younger grades and the University of Colorado Boulder closing for non-essential services. The Boulder Valley School District is monitoring potential impacts on classes, while the Arvada Center’s performance of “Frozen” remains scheduled.
Customers are advised to check for outage possibilities online and take precautions, such as charging portable devices and preparing emergency supplies. Power outages may extend beyond the affected areas, with restoration efforts expected to begin after the risky conditions subside around 6 p.m. Wednesday.
