The Sacramento Regional Transit Authority (SacRT) is seeking public feedback on revised plans for the long-discussed Downtown Riverfront Streetcar project. Initially proposed a decade ago, the project aimed to create a 5.3-mile route with 23 stations, linking West Sacramento to downtown Sacramento, including Sutter Health Park and key destinations like the Golden 1 Center.
The updated plan, approved by the Sacramento City Council and SacRT Board in 2022, has been scaled down to 2.9 miles with only three new stations: one at Sutter Health Park, one in Old Sacramento at 2nd and Capitol, and another along N Street. This revised route will connect to six existing light rail stations.
The changes were made due to unexpectedly high construction bids for the original project. SacRT aims to still meet regional connectivity and access goals while being more budget-friendly and easier to implement. The total budget for the project is $164.3 million, with funds allocated from various sources. No additional funding is needed as the project progresses, with final costs expected to be confirmed by late summer 2026. Public comments on the plan will be accepted until January 15, and construction is anticipated to be completed by 2029.
