A former Royal Marine, Paul Doyle, was sentenced to 21-and-a-half years in prison for driving his minivan into a crowd of Liverpool football fans during a victory parade, injuring over 130 people. Doyle, 54, pleaded guilty to multiple charges of grievous bodily harm, stating he acted out of anger when he couldn’t reach his destination quickly. Judge Andrew Menary described the incident as shocking, highlighting the disturbing dashcam footage showing fans being thrown onto the car or the ground as Doyle accelerated through the crowd.
Statements from 78 victims were read in court, illustrating the trauma caused, including accounts from mothers who witnessed their children being hit and a teenager plagued by nightmares. Doyle’s actions only stopped when a bystander intervened. Despite his prior violent convictions, he expressed remorse through his lawyer, although many victims expressed frustration at his self-pity. The court found no mechanical issues with the vehicle, and Doyle was not under the influence of substances at the time.
