The explosion of a UPS cargo plane has resulted in a death toll of 13, confirmed by Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg. The three pilots on board were identified as Captain Richard Wartenberg, First Officer Lee Truitt, and Captain Dana Diamond. The plane lost its left engine shortly after takeoff from Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport, leading to a crash and explosion. Investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are examining the plane’s maintenance history, especially concerning repairs made weeks prior. The flight data and cockpit voice recorders, known as black boxes, were recovered undamaged.
UPS has expressed its condolences and commitment to support affected families. Operations resumed at UPS’s hub in Louisville following the incident. A candlelight vigil was held by the Teamsters union for the victims, highlighting the shock and sorrow in the community.
