IntrCity SmartBus, an Indian intercity bus platform, has raised $30 million in a Series D funding round led by A91 Partners, valuing the startup at $140 million. The company aims to expand its network in small and medium-sized cities, addressing the growing demand for intercity travel in India as more people move to urban areas for work and education.
With the national highway network significantly expanding over the last decade, railroad capacity remains limited, making road travel essential. IntrCity SmartBus differentiates itself by using an asset-light model, partnering with local bus operators and integrating advanced tracking technology and centralized booking through its digital platform. Each bus is staffed with trained personnel called “captains” and features amenities like onboard washrooms and air-conditioned lounges.
Founded in 2019, originally under the RailYatri brand, IntrCity SmartBus now conducts about 600 trips daily, serving 20,000 to 25,000 passengers, primarily for work and education. The startup aims to expand its reach while enhancing safety and customer experience. IntrCity generated approximately $57 million in revenue last fiscal year, projecting growth to over $79 million this year. Competing with new intercity bus startups, IntrCity prioritizes operational excellence to establish buses as a viable transportation option in India.
