A cargo plane, a Boeing 747 operated by Türkiye-based ACT Airlines, skidded off the runway at Hong Kong International Airport and collided with a security police car early Monday, resulting in the deaths of two security guards. The aircraft had just landed from Dubai around 3:50 a.m. and was on a wet lease from Emirates. Four crew members onboard were unharmed.
The plane skidded left while taxiing and struck the police car outside the airport’s fence, not on the runway. When rescuers arrived, the aircraft was partially submerged, with the crew safely waiting for help. Two of the trapped security guards were found in the car.
The incident occurred on the airport’s north runway, which is now closed, although other runways remained operational, not affecting flights. Clear weather was reported at the time of landing. An investigation is underway to determine the cause, focusing on various factors, including the aircraft’s systems and maintenance.
This incident marks the second fatal crash involving ACT Airlines; a previous crash in Kyrgyzstan in 2017 killed all four crew members and 35 people on the ground.
