In Iowa, local government officials, led by Johnson County Board Chairman John Green, have refused an order from Republican Governor Kim Reynolds to lower the flag to half-staff in honor of Charlie Kirk, a political activist recently killed. Green, a Democrat, condemned the murder but criticized Kirk’s controversial career, stating that honoring him would contradict the values of the diverse community in Johnson County. He cited a lack of similar honors for victims of gun violence in the past as a reason for his decision.
Reynolds responded by criticizing the decision as dishonorable, urging local officials to prioritize human decency over politics. Iowa Senator Zach Worles opposed Green’s stance, believing the flag should be lowered as instructed, while fellow board member Mandy Remington supported Green, emphasizing that Kirk’s actions had marginalized many community members.
Green expressed confidence in his right to refuse the governor’s order, asserting that Reynolds lacked legal authority to remove him. A memorial for Kirk is scheduled by his organization, Turning Point USA, in Arizona soon after.
