Xavier Gipson has been released by the New York Jets following a costly fumble in their season opener against Pittsburgh, which ended in a 34-32 loss. Coach Aaron Glenn stated that the decision was not just about that one incident, highlighting Gipson’s overall 10 fumbles in 35 career games. Despite Gipson’s contributions—he had 27 catches for 268 yards and led the team in punt returns—Glenn felt it was time for a change to improve accountability.
Gipson stepped in for the injured Kenne Nwanwu, who is still being evaluated for a hamstring injury. The Jets are exploring options for returners, including Isaiah Williams, who was signed from Cincinnati’s practice squad, as well as other rookies.
Additionally, rookie tight end Mason Taylor is managing an ankle issue, while defensive tackle Jay Tufele is dealing with personal matters. Glenn emphasized the team’s commitment to making thoughtful roster decisions rather than impulsive ones.
