French President Emmanuel Macron has announced France’s intention to recognize Palestinian statehood, encouraging similar actions from other Western nations like the UK, Canada, and Australia. This decision aims to reinvigorate the two-state solution amid the ongoing Gaza conflict, which has resulted in over 63,000 Palestinian deaths since the war began on October 7, 2023. In a letter to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Macron emphasized the importance of Palestinian nationhood for Israel’s security and condemned the humanitarian crisis in Gaza as unjustified.
Despite the growing international support for Palestinian recognition, Netanyahu has dismissed the idea, opting instead to intensify military operations in Gaza. Over 140 countries already recognize the Palestinian state, and European leaders are pushing for a revitalized Palestinian authority as part of the diplomatic efforts.
