A new Superman statue was unveiled in downtown Cleveland, symbolizing the city’s pivotal role in comic book history, as acknowledged by Cuyahoga County executive Chris Ronine. The statue honors creators Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, who conceived Superman in their Cleveland neighborhood. Ronine expressed his commitment to preserving this legacy for the future.
The county’s monument committee, established in 2019, played a crucial role in bringing the statue to life and will oversee its maintenance along with other local memorials. This committee was created to formalize the process for accepting and caring for monuments, which previously lacked a structured approach. The Superman Tribute Plaza, valued at $2.2 million, features the statue alongside bronze figures of Siegel and Shuster, and includes nods to Clark Kent’s iconic imagery.
In addition to maintaining current memorials, the committee is exploring the potential inclusion of additional artworks and is currently assessing the condition of existing pieces. Maintaining community pride and inspiring future generations is a central mission for both the committee and Ronine, who hopes the statue will encourage new dreamers and creators in Cleveland.
