Cogat, the Israeli coordination body, claims that Hamas has exaggerated casualty figures due to malnutrition in Gaza. A review found a significant discrepancy between Hamas’s reported deaths and documented cases, suggesting many victims had pre-existing medical conditions unrelated to nutrition.
From the onset of the war until June 2025, Hamas reported 66 malnutrition-related deaths, later increasing to over 133 by July, but Cogat noted a lack of detailed identification for these cases. Cogat identified specific individuals, indicating their medical issues were not primarily caused by malnutrition.
Israeli officials argue that the general population in Gaza is not suffering widespread malnutrition, and they have made efforts to facilitate aid distribution in the region. However, international organizations, including the UN, have raised concerns about the complicated conditions for aid delivery and questioned Israel’s humanitarian response.
The conflict has escalated since October 7, 2023, when Hamas launched attacks resulting in numerous casualties, and the situation continues to evolve amidst claims and counterclaims from both sides.
