The Minnesota DFL is facing challenges over the approval process for Minneapolis Mayor Omar Fate, citing irregularities during the voting at the DFL Convention. For recognition, a majority of representatives is needed, but concerns have arisen over the electronic voting system, which counted only 578 votes despite over 750 representatives being present.
Incumbent Mayor Jacob Frey and former DFL chair Mike Erlandson are contesting the voting process, highlighting that leadership may not have confirmed a quorum before the final vote. Many attendees were disillusioned and left before the hand vote. DFL Chairman John Murray addressed the criticisms, attributing delays to a medical emergency with a tech consultant and transitioning to paper votes.
Erlandson condemned the process as procedurally flawed, calling it one of the most unfair conventions he has attended. Both he and Frey are urging the DFL to withdraw support for Fate and the candidates of the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Committee. A state DFL spokesman declined to comment, indicating an ongoing review of the complaints.
