Fernando Ramirez, 23, who has a long history of violence and hate crimes, was involved in a serious incident outside the East Hollywood music venue on Saturday. Previously convicted for assaulting a Black employee at a Whole Foods, Ramirez expressed hatred towards Black people during police questioning about that attack. On Saturday, after being kicked out of the Vermont Hollywood Club, he drove into a crowd of people, injuring at least 36, with some requiring hospitalization. Witnesses described chaotic scenes with victims on the ground and bystanders intervening aggressively.
During the melee, someone shot Ramirez in the buttocks as he was restrained by the crowd. Following surgery, he is now in stable condition and has been arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon. This incident raised concerns about potential casualties and prompted a response from over 120 firefighters and paramedics.
Ramirez’s criminal history includes multiple convictions for battery and domestic violence. The Vermont Hollywood Club issued a statement expressing sadness over the incident and pledged cooperation with law enforcement. Police are investigating the shooting of Ramirez and have released a description of the suspect involved.
