Chase Childer, a former professional baseball player who transitioned to a police officer, tragically drowned while trying to save five family members caught in a riptide during a vacation in Pawleys Island, South Carolina. On July 13, he displayed extraordinary courage by assisting others in distress, but unfortunately, he could not be rescued himself. After a search by local authorities, his body was recovered about 90 minutes later.
Childer, 38, played for the Baltimore Orioles and served as a police officer in Cobb County, Georgia, where he was recognized for his lifesaving efforts in 2012. A GoFundMe page was launched to support his wife Natalie and their three children, raising over $160,000. The page praised him as a devoted family man and highlighted the emotional toll on his loved ones following this tragic event. The Pawleys Island Police Chief recognized Childer’s instinct to help during an emergency, emphasizing the profound loss felt by his family and community.
