The trial of Senator Nicole Mitchell is currently underway in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota. She is accused of breaking into her stepmother’s home to take belongings, including her late father’s ashes.
The proceedings began with brief statements from both the prosecution and defense, followed by testimony from dispatcher Joseph Robbins. He recounted a 911 call from Carol Mitchell, who reported an intruder in her home that she believed was a man.
Detroit Lake Police Officer Joseph Sternhagen, now an investigator, testified next, noting that Mitchell had previously expressed anger toward her stepmother. He described finding Mitchell in her stepmother’s basement, dressed in black, and issuing commands for her to comply. During the encounter, Mitchell explained that she was trying to retrieve her father’s belongings because they were causing her distress.
Carol Mitchell, the stepmother, was also called to testify but refused to allow video recording. The prosecution argues that the case is clear-cut, stating Mitchell purposely stole items from her stepmother. Meanwhile, her defense attorney claimed that the emotional strain of losing her father, coupled with her stepmother’s struggles with Alzheimer’s disease, influenced Mitchell’s actions.
The defense contends that Mitchell entered the home with no intention to commit robbery but rather to check on her stepmother’s wellbeing. The trial continues as both sides present their arguments.
