The Colorado Avalanche Hockey Club has signed defenseman Brent Burns to a one-year contract for the 2025-26 season. Burns, 40, had a successful 2024-25 season with the Carolina Hurricanes, tallying 29 points (6 goals, 23 assists) in 82 regular-season games and contributing 5 points (1 goal, 4 assists) in 15 playoff games. He averaged 20:57 on the ice and was a key player, ranking second among defensemen in assists and points while maintaining an impressive streak of 925 consecutive games played.
Over his 21-year NHL career, Burns has accumulated 910 points (261 goals, 649 assists) across 1,497 regular-season games and has had six seasons with over 60 points. He claimed the James Norris Memorial Trophy in 2017, leading all defensemen in goals and points that season. In postseason play, he has recorded 80 points (24 goals, 56 assists) in 135 games, ranking among the top active defensemen in several categories.
Burns was traded to the Hurricanes in 2022 after an 11-season stint with the San Jose Sharks, where he became the franchise’s all-time leader in goals and assists among defensemen. Internationally, he won a gold medal with Team Canada at the 2016 World Cup of Hockey, along with two silver medals in other competitions.
Originally drafted by Minnesota, Burns began his career with the Wild before moving to San Jose. He is recognized for both his performance on the ice and his contributions to the community, having participated in numerous All-Star games and received awards for his charitable efforts.
