Astronomers have identified a new interstellar object, named A11PL3Z, which is on a trajectory suggesting it originated from beyond our solar system. This discovery adds to the previously known interstellar visitors, ‘Oumuamua and Comet 2i/Borisov’. The International Astronomical Union’s Minor Planet Center recognized A11PL3Z on July 1, 2025. Despite its proximity to Earth, there is no risk of collision.
The object, currently classified as a “dim space rock” with a trajectory eccentricity suggesting strong interstellar origins, is expected to make its closest approach to the Sun in October 2025. Observations by astronomers, including an undergraduate named Astrafoxen and amateur astronomer Samdeen, have provided insights into its path. The fascination with A11PL3Z’s unusually high eccentricity indicates that it is unlike typical comets, reinforcing its interstellar classification.
Overall, A11PL3Z represents a significant addition to our understanding of solar system visitors from interstellar space.
