This year, July 4th falls on a Friday for the first time in over a decade, leading to a predicted record of 72.2 million travelers moving at least 50 miles between June 28 and July 6, an increase of 1.7 million from last year, according to AAA. The bulk of travelers will be driving (61.6 million), while around 5.84 million are expected to fly.
For those driving, the busiest travel days are expected to be Wednesday, July 2, and Sunday, July 6, with tips to travel early to avoid congestion. AAA recommends vehicle maintenance and packing an emergency kit that includes essentials like first aid items, tools, snacks, and water. Last year, AAA responded to 700,000 roadside emergencies.
Air travel will see over 18.5 million travelers, with Sunday, July 6, being the peak day at 2.9 million flyers. The TSA is prepared for the rush and advises travelers to arrive at the airport at least 2 hours before departure. Major airports during the holiday include Atlanta, Dallas, Denver, Chicago, and Los Angeles.
For accommodation, popular destinations include Orlando, Seattle, New York, and Denver. Last-minute hotel deals may be available in major cities. Travelers are advised to book 12-48 hours in advance for the best rates.
