The Buffalo Sabres selected right-shot defender Radiam Martoka with the ninth overall pick in the 2025 NHL Draft. Hailing from Hublik Wevbrod in the Czech Republic, Martoka recently played for the Seattle Thunderbirds in the WHL, where he achieved 35 points (3 goals, 32 assists) and a +10 rating in 43 games, ranking third among rookie defensemen. He has represented the Czech Republic internationally, earning a silver medal at the 2024 Hlinka Gretzky Cup.
At 6-foot-6 and 218 pounds, Martoka is noted for his defensive skills, reach, and skating, as well as his ability to contribute offensively. NHL analyst Mike G. Morreale highlighted his significant potential, pointing out that he only began seriously pursuing hockey a few years ago. Athletic’s Corey Pronman remarked that Martoka is likely to become a reliable top-four defenseman in the NHL.
Martoka acknowledged his earlier struggles with physicality, citing a tendency to take penalties. He aims to improve in this area as he matures physically. The Sabres are enhancing their defensive lineup, complementing existing left-shot defenders like Rasmus Dahlin and Owen Power with the addition of Martoka and recent trade acquisition Michael Kesselling. NHL Central Scouting praised Martoka as a prototype NHL player, emphasizing his mobility, understanding of the game, and ability to perform well under pressure while creating scoring opportunities.
