Archaeologists in Khalicz, western Ukraine, made significant discoveries beneath Galician Castle, long sealed by centuries of turmoil. In 2023, an investigation led by the National Academy of Sciences revealed a hidden chamber thought to have remained undiscovered since the 1676 Turkish-Polish War.
The excavation was labor-intensive, as over 150 cubic meters of debris were removed by hand to preserve historical artifacts. Initial analyses suggest the chamber served as a casemate for storing weapons and venting smoke during battles, highlighting the castle’s defense system.
A notable feature of the chamber is a small opening, potentially leading to an underground tunnel, adding intrigue to local legends about secret passages beneath the fortress. The castle itself has a storied history dating back to the 12th century, with renovations that reflect its importance in regional conflicts.
