Tesla is set to suspend production of Cybertrucks and Model Y vehicles at its Austin plant for a week, starting the week of June 30. This marks the company’s third shutdown in the past year. Employees will have the option to use paid leave or participate in voluntary training during this suspension, which aims to facilitate production line maintenance and improvements.
The temporary halt is also linked to preparations for the launch of Tesla’s Robotaxi service in Austin, with CEO Elon Musk stating that the first rides will utilize Model Y vehicles. Tesla did not comment on the shutdown details, but has faced similar production suspensions in recent months, attributed to various issues including battery supply.
Historically, production shutdowns for maintenance are common among automakers, especially during slower sales periods. The automotive industry has seen delays and reductions in production due to supply chain issues, including the recent semiconductor shortage.
Tesla plans to unveil its second-quarter shipping numbers in July, following a reported 13% decline in the first quarter compared to the previous year. The highly anticipated Robotaxi service is expected to commence in early June, with Musk emphasizing safety in the rollout.
