Japan has welcomed a new grand champion in sumo, Onosart, a 191-kilogram (421-pound) wrestler, marking the first Japanese Yokozuna since 2017. He aims to uphold the title with pride after winning the recent summer Grand Lami tournament. At just 24 years old, originally named Nakamura Daihiki, Onosart hails from Ishikawa Prefecture, which recently suffered from a catastrophic earthquake and tsunami. He expressed his desire to uplift the affected region through his achievements in sumo.
Onosart’s promotion sets the stage for a rivalry with Mongolian wrestler Hoshijima, as both will compete in an upcoming tournament in Nagoya. Sumo, deeply embedded in Japanese culture, involves rigorous training and traditional rituals.
