The University of Florida’s Board of Directors has unanimously chosen Dr. Santa J. Ono as the next president, pending approval from the Florida Governor’s Committee. Ono, who previously served as president of the University of Michigan, brings a strong academic and public health leadership background. Renowned for his research in vision and immunology, he is a member of several prestigious academies and has received multiple honorary degrees.
Board Chairman Mori Hosseini praised Ono as an ideal fit for the role, emphasizing his alignment with Florida’s values in prioritizing merit and scholarship. The search committee recognized him as the top candidate among many. Ono’s prior roles include leadership positions at various prestigious institutions, including Emory University and the University of Cincinnati, and he holds degrees from the University of Chicago.
