Three Iranian nationals, Mostafa Sepahvand, Farhad Javadi Manesh, and Shapoor Qalehali Khani Noori, appeared in Westminster Magistrates’ Court, facing charges of targeting journalists from Iran International, a London-based media organization. They arrived in the UK between 2016 and 2022 after claiming asylum. The men are accused of acts that could aid Iranian intelligence in conducting activities related to the UK, with serious violence intended against British individuals.
Interior Secretary Yvette Cooper emphasized the need for national security measures, stating, “Iran must be detained to explain its actions.” The defendants conducted surveillance aimed at identifying journalists critical of the Iranian regime, which is classified as a terrorist organization in Iran. The three have been in custody since their arrest on May 3, alongside five other Iranian individuals involved in a separate terrorism investigation.
The Metropolitan Police’s Counterterrorism Command described the investigation as complex, stating it required constant efforts to ensure safety and security. There was a caution against public discussion of the case to protect ongoing judicial procedures. The defendants are set to appear at the Old Bailey on June 6.
