Dutch climate activists, led by the nonprofit Milieudefensie, plan to take legal action against Shell to halt the company’s new oil and gas projects, which they argue exacerbate climate change. They are returning to court six months after Shell successfully overturned a ruling that mandated a 45% emissions reduction in line with the Paris Climate Agreement. Milieudefensie director Donald Pol emphasized the urgency of stopping new fossil fuel developments, stating that Shell’s continued commitment to such projects poses significant risks.
While Shell acknowledged receiving the activists’ letter, it asserted that the proposed actions would hinder the energy transition and emphasized the need for cooperation among governments, businesses, and consumers. This lawsuit follows a history of legal confrontations between Shell and climate activists, including a recent resolution of a lawsuit with Greenpeace after a protest.
