Tybee Island has issued warnings regarding the presence of Portuguese Man-O-War on its beaches. These creatures are dangerous, with toxic tentacles that can cause painful stings and severe allergic reactions. Beachgoers are advised to avoid touching any marine life washed ashore and to maintain a safe distance from the water.
Visitors should be able to identify Portuguese Man-O-War by their balloon-like floats, which can be blue, purple, or pinkish. Though there have been recent sightings, no stings have been reported this season. If stung, it is recommended to use tweezers to remove tentacles and soak the area in warm seawater for pain relief. In case of serious reactions, calling emergency services is advised.
