Google is rolling out fixes for Chromecast devices rendered inoperative due to an expired security certificate. On March 9th, users of second-generation Chromecast and Chromecast Audio reported problems with the official Google app, while unofficial apps like VLC continued to function. The issue was attributed to an expired device authentication certificate, causing the devices to display an “untrusted device” error.
Google confirmed that firmware updates will be deployed within the next few days, transitioning affected devices to a new Google-owned certificate authority valid until 2045. Users are advised to keep their devices connected to Wi-Fi to receive updates. However, those who attempted a factory reset while troubleshooting may face additional complications, as the expired certificate prevents them from regaining an Internet connection and receiving updates.
Experts caution against factory resets, as they clear user data and may complicate the device’s ability to connect to the network. Google needs to manage updates for other devices facing similar certificate expiration issues in the near future, with several set to face similar challenges by 2026 and 2027.
