The Argentine military has intensified efforts to combat illegal fishing operations near its exclusive economic zone (EEZ), focusing on a significant fleet of around 200 Chinese fishing boats off its southern coast, targeting squid—a crucial marine food source. Footage from P-3 surveillance aircraft highlights the scale of the illegal fishing activities, raising concerns about the impact on the marine ecosystem and local fishing communities.

Experts warn that unregulated fishing poses existential risks to Argentina’s natural resources, with over 80% of the vessels identified sailing under Chinese flags. The Argentine Navy is monitoring these activities more closely, as historical data indicates a pattern of illegal fishing practices concentrated in the area. Many Chinese ships reportedly disable their tracking beacons to evade detection, complicating enforcement efforts.

The Chinese government maintains that it adheres to responsible fishing practices despite numerous allegations of illegal operations and human rights violations associated with its fishing fleets. The situation is part of a broader trend of Chinese fishing vessels encroaching on international waters, which has sparked global concerns over sustainable fishing and marine biodiversity. Local fishermen claim to be severely impacted by foreign competition, as they catch far less than in previous years. The imbalance highlights the urgent need for stricter regulations and enforcement to protect marine resources and local livelihoods.
