Governor Kathy Hochul announced a 26% reduction in fare avoidance on New York City’s subway system in the past six months, decreasing from 14% to 10% of riders evading fares. This positive trend follows revelations that the MTA lost approximately $690 million due to unpaid fares and tolls in 2022. To combat fare evasion, city officials have implemented a comprehensive strategy, modernizing fare gates and improving enforcement tactics.
NYPD increased fare enforcement, issuing 143,100 summonses in 2024, marking a 96% rise in enforcement actions compared to 2019. The MTA also introduced a bus enforcement unit and enhanced collaboration with NYPD to ensure compliance across all routes. While officials highlight improved safety, some commuters express concern over prioritizing fare enforcement over addressing transportation access for vulnerable populations.
The MTA plans to introduce more advanced technologies and fare gates at high-traffic locations as part of ongoing efforts to enhance compliance and safety in the transit system.
