Mary Brown and her husband, Sebastian, initially met in Chicago, where they both lived. Sebastian, originally from France, expressed his intent to return to Europe early in their relationship. After living together in Chicago during the pandemic, they began considering a move to Switzerland, where Sebastian secured a transfer to the company’s office in Bern. They married in March 2022 and prepared for their immigration process, eventually moving to Zurich.
Living arrangements shifted as they navigated temporary housing while waiting for permanent placement. They later found a more suitable apartment outside of Zurich, but challenges arose with Brown’s job during her maternity leave, prompting concerns about career vs. family. The couple currently resides in Fribourg, enjoying lower living costs and raising their daughter in a French-speaking environment, which Brown appreciates for its safety and cultural atmosphere. Although they miss certain American conveniences, they do not foresee returning to the U.S. soon, focusing instead on learning French and adapting to their new life.
