Dmytro Khilyuk, a Ukrainian journalist held in Russian custody for over three years, was released during a recent prisoner exchange between Ukraine and Russia. His parents, who had tirelessly campaigned for his release, were overjoyed upon learning of his return. Khilyuk had been detained along with his father while seeking basic supplies during the occupation of their village. Moscow had previously denied his detention despite reports from fellow prisoners.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed that Khilyuk was among eight civilians released on Sunday, alongside military personnel. The Russian Ministry of Defense claimed that 146 Russian military members were returned in exchange for the Ukrainian prisoners, though Kyiv did not comment on the specifics of the exchange.
Zelensky’s Chief of Staff noted the release of other notable civilians and emphasized that this event offers hope to the families of detained Ukrainians. Kyiv estimates that at least 16,000 Ukrainian civilians are currently detained in Russia, with many others missing. The detention of civilians under occupation is deemed illegal under international law, further complicating the situation regarding their treatment and exchange.
