Tuscaloosa County Judge Daniel Ploue denied the NCAA’s restraining order against University of Alabama center Charles Bediako, resulting in his ineligibility to play for the Crimson Tide. Initially granted a temporary restraining order by Judge Jim Roberts that allowed Bediako to play five games after being declared ineligible, this order was extended until a hearing. However, Roberts recused himself due to a conflict of interest, and Ploue took over the case.
During the games he played, Bediako averaged 10.0 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 1.4 blocks, with the team achieving a record of 3-2. His situation garnered controversy due to his past as a professional player, including his time in the G League and declaring for the NBA Draft without being selected.
Alabama head coach Nate Oats criticized the NCAA system but supported Bediako’s eligibility, arguing that he should not be penalized for choosing academics over immediate professional play. SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey disputed Bediako’s eligibility, stating that the inconsistent application of NCAA rules causes turmoil in college sports. Bediako’s absence will be felt in Alabama’s next game against Ole Miss.
