Anthropic’s Super Bowl commercial, one of four released by AI Labs, opens with the word “BETRAYAL.” It features a man seeking advice from a chatbot, humorously portrayed by a blonde woman, who suggests a nature walk before shifting to an ad for a fictional cougar dating site. Anthropic emphasized that its chatbot, Claude, won’t carry ads, in contrast to OpenAI’s recent announcement that ChatGPT’s free tier will include advertisements.
Another ad shows a young man looking for fitness advice but receiving an ad for height-increasing insoles instead. The commercials are seen as a direct jab at OpenAI, following backlash over its decision to add ads to ChatGPT. Sam Altman, OpenAI’s CEO, acknowledged the humor but criticized Anthropic for being “dishonest” about the nature of advertising. He insisted that OpenAI’s ads would be clearly labeled and separate from conversations.
Altman also claimed Anthropic targets wealthier users with its pricing strategies and accused them of controlling AI usage, while both companies emphasize safety and responsible use policies. The rivalry escalated with Altman labeling the critique as “authoritarian,” a term he used somewhat controversially considering global events. Overall, Anthropic’s ads have effectively provoked strong reactions in the competitive landscape of AI chatbots.
