A gas explosion at the Bristol Health and Rehabilitation Center in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, resulted in the deaths of two women—a 52-year-old nurse named Msoni Nduthu and a resident, whose identity has not been released. The explosion occurred around 2:15 p.m., injuring 20 individuals, with 19 still hospitalized (one in critical condition) as of Wednesday morning.
Firefighters encountered a chaotic rescue scenario, retrieving trapped residents through windows and doors. A second explosion occurred during these efforts. Crews from neighboring areas assisted in the rescue, underlining the urgency of the situation.
Prior to the explosion, staff had reported a gas odor, and investigations are ongoing to determine the cause. The facility had previously failed to comply with several state regulations concerning safety measures, including fire safety and maintenance. State inspection reports indicated significant deficiencies, contributing to the facility’s below-average rating.
Officials, including Governor Josh Shapiro, have called for community support and prayer for those affected.
