Luigi Mangione was arrested in a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on December 9, following an investigation into the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. Body camera footage from the arrest shows Mangione appearing nervous as he was questioned by police. The encounter unfolded amid Christmas carols playing in the background, creating a surreal atmosphere.
The police were initially skeptical of a 911 call from a restaurant manager who believed Mangione resembled the “CEO shooter” from the news. Despite the call being marked as low priority, police approached him after verifying his masked appearance. Mangione eventually removed his mask, smiling as the officers recognized him.
Officer Joseph Detwiler, who first arrived on the scene, recalled that he initially doubted the suspect’s identity. There was a significant police presence by the time Mangione was handcuffed. Prosecutors aim to show the officers acted appropriately in stopping and questioning Mangione, claiming his backpack contained evidence related to the murder.
However, the defense argues that police had no right to search his belongings without a warrant and contends that Mangione was improperly questioned before being informed of his rights. The hearing on evidence suppression continues, with no trial dates set yet.
