More than 30 people have been rescued and three are still missing in western Alaska following Typhoon Halong, which caused hurricane-force winds and flooding that swept away homes in coastal communities. Rescue operations are underway in the remote villages of Kipnuk and Kwigilingok, where reports of missing persons have emerged. The Alaska State Troopers confirmed the rescue of at least 18 people in Kwigilingok and 16 in Kipnuk, with ongoing efforts to locate additional missing individuals.
Around 600 people have sought refuge in schools in Kipnuk, while 300 have evacuated to Kwigilingok. Governor Mike Dunleavy assured that aid is on the way for those affected.
On the East Coast, a storm system has prompted major coastal flooding from Virginia to New Jersey, with predictions of high waves and storm surges. New Jersey and parts of New York have declared states of emergency, with events like New York City’s Columbus Day Parade canceled. In Delaware, the National Guard has been activated in response to flooding. Meanwhile, severe storm damage continues in the Outer Banks of North Carolina, where some homes have collapsed due to strong waves.
