Microsoft is moving Windows 10 to "End of Support" status on October 14, meaning it will no longer receive security updates, although it will still function. To maintain security, users have three main options:
- Upgrade to Windows 11 for free if their hardware is compatible.
- Purchase a new PC with Windows 11 preinstalled or switch to an alternative like a Mac or Chromebook.
- Sign up for a free year of Extended Security Updates (ESU) for Windows 10.
The ESU option provides an extra year of security for Windows 10 users. To sign up, follow these steps:
- Ensure your PC is up to date via Settings > System > About.
- Use an administrator account (usually the first account created).
- Check for an upgrade to Windows 11 and proceed if available.
- Register for ESU in Settings > Update & Security by clicking on "Register Now."
- Choose your upgrade method, which requires backing up your PC settings.
If you opt for the free ESU, you may need to link your Windows login to Microsoft’s cloud services. Free backups are limited to 5 GB, requiring payment for additional storage.
After registration, you’ll have a year to decide your next upgrade path to Windows 11. Updates will be provided if anything changes next year.
