Alaska Airlines has announced an increase in checked baggage fees, effective April 10, 2026, due to rising fuel prices and global uncertainties. The new fees are as follows:
– 1st bag: $45 (up from $40)
– 2nd bag: $55 (up from $45)
– 3rd or more bags: $200 (up from $150)
Atmos Rewards members and those with specific credit cards will retain their current baggage benefits, while programs like Huakai and Club 49 remain unchanged. Oversized and overweight baggage fees will not be affected.
The fee hike aligns Alaska Airlines with other major airlines like Delta and Southwest, which also have similar rate structures. Aviation expert Scott Hamilton indicated that heightened fuel costs, largely due to the ongoing war in Iran, are influencing these changes and suggested that such high baggage fees may persist.
Many passengers at SeaTac Airport expressed frustration, particularly families traveling with multiple bags. Some indicated they would adapt by budgeting more for travel expenses or even using courier services for their luggage to minimize costs. One traveler shared concern over the increased expenses when checking multiple bags for international flights.
