An attempted murder trial involving anesthesiologist Gerhard König is nearing conclusion in Honolulu, with closing arguments scheduled for Tuesday. The case stems from a violent incident during a hike on the Pali Puka Trail in March 2025, where König allegedly tried to kill his wife, Ariel Koenig, after confronting her about an emotional affair with a colleague.
Ariel testified that Gerhard attempted to push her off a cliff and assaulted her with a rock and a syringe. In response, Gerhard claimed he acted in self-defense, insisting he never intended to harm her and denying the presence of a syringe. The couple’s tumultuous relationship and the events leading up to the hike were aired through live-streamed court testimony.
The trial revealed that two hikers intervened after hearing Ariel’s screams. Gerhard expressed suicidal thoughts as he witnessed his wife crawl away and later contacted his son, who reported to authorities that his father had attempted to kill Ariel. Ultimately, Gerhard decided to surrender to the police after hours on the mountain, leading to Ariel later filing for divorce.
