In Istanbul, three assailants opened fire on police outside the Israeli consulate on Tuesday, resulting in a gunfight that left one attacker dead and two others wounded and captured. The attackers, who were armed with long-barreled weapons, reportedly traveled from Izmit, and one had ties to a group he claimed exploits religion, though no specific organization was named.
The incident occurred in the Levent business district, where no Israeli diplomats were present due to security concerns related to the ongoing Gaza conflict. Video footage showed an assailant using an assault rifle while hiding behind a bus during the gunfire exchange.
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan condemned the attack, labeling it a “betrayal,” and emphasized Turkey’s resolve against terrorism. The U.S. Ambassador and Israel’s Foreign Ministry also condemned the assault, commending the quick response of Turkish security forces. An investigation is ongoing, with three prosecutors assigned to the case.
