United Airlines will increase checked baggage fees by $10 starting Friday, as a result of rising jet fuel costs linked to ongoing conflicts in the Middle East. The first checked bag will now cost $45 on domestic and several international routes, while the second bag will be priced at $55. This marks the first baggage fee hike in two years. CEO Scott Kirby noted that increased jet fuel prices since February have raised operating expenses by about $400 million. Passengers with certain credit cards, loyalty tiers, active military status, and premium cabin travelers will still receive a free first checked bag. Late check-ins within 24 hours of departure will incur an additional $5 fee.
Additionally, JetBlue recently raised its checked baggage fees by $9 during peak travel periods. The war has disrupted global oil supplies, particularly around the Strait of Hormuz, leading to fluctuating oil prices that directly impact airline fuel costs. As airlines seek new revenue streams amidst soaring fuel prices, many are expected to raise ticket prices.
United Airlines will also introduce a new tiered fare structure for premium cabins on select long-haul and transcontinental flights. The base fares will offer the lowest prices without some standard features, while higher tiers will include amenities like advance seat selection, extra baggage, and flexibility in itinerary changes. This new fare model will expand to more routes later this year.
