The recent addition of the free multiplayer co-op mode, Legends, in Ghost of Yorei includes a unique twist: players can engage in the coin-flicking game Zenihajiki with friends. Darren Bridges, senior staff designer and Legends lead at Sucker Punch, revealed that the studio had always intended to introduce a multiplayer component, but the fan enthusiasm for the coin game motivated them to develop competitive PvP rules for it. They tested these new rules using physical coins, which were conveniently included in the game’s Collector’s Edition.
Bridges noted that Ghost of Yorei‘s combat system is designed for PvE, making co-op the primary focus of Legends, despite some players wishing for direct player-vs-player duels. The studio learned from Ghost of Tsushima’s multiplayer that downtime in cooperative play could be minimized by creating lobbies with engaging activities.
Additionally, Bridges confirmed that the development of Legends began early alongside the main game, ensuring a seamless integration, with plans for no additional charges or microtransactions for this update. He emphasized the creative freedom the fantastical elements in Yorei offer, allowing for varied cooperative gameplay mechanics and challenging enemies. Bridges highlighted Sucker Punch’s commitment to evolving their multiplayer offerings, building on lessons learned from their past projects to enhance player experiences.
