Pope Leo XIV marked Good Friday by leading a procession at the Colosseum, lifting a wooden cross for the first time in decades. This act symbolizes his role as a spiritual leader and the ongoing suffering of Christ. Accompanied by young men and a priest, Leo began with a meditation on authority and responsibility, emphasizing that leaders must answer to God for their actions.
Thousands attended the event, including Sister Perenatita Chieoma Finau, who expressed the significance of participating in the Stations of the Cross with the people of Rome. Historically, Pope John Paul II carried the cross consistently until health issues affected his ability, as did his successors.
The Stations of the Cross reflect Jesus’ final hours and aim to anchor faith in the real world, according to Rev. Francesco Patton. At 70, Pope Leo remains active and healthy, with a history of regular exercise. He will continue his Holy Week activities with the Easter Vigil and an open-air Mass on Easter Sunday, delivering the traditional Urbi et Orbi blessing.
